Single Sliding or Bi-Parting?

Single Sliding or Bi-Parting?

A cold room entrance may be wide enough for a loaded pallet, yet leave nowhere for the door to slide. A nearby column, another doorway or a rack beside the opening can decide which configuration fits. Choosing between a single sliding cold room door and a bi-parting model starts with that surrounding space, then moves to how people use the entrance.

Look Beyond the Clear Opening

A single sliding door moves one leaf to the left or right. It needs an unobstructed run on the chosen side so the leaf can clear the passage.

A bi-parting door uses two leaves that move apart from the centre. This divides the sideways travel between both sides, which can help when neither side accommodates one large leaf. It still requires usable space on both sides.

Do not calculate installation space from the opening width alone. Leaf overlap, tracks, stops, handles and any drive equipment affect the overall arrangement. Confirm these dimensions on the proposed door drawing before placing adjacent equipment.

Compare the Layouts

A wider entrance does not automatically require a bi-parting door. Available door sizes, supporting construction and operating requirements also influence the choice.

Separate Leaf Layout From Operation

Single sliding and bi-parting describe how the leaves move. Manual and automatic describe how they are operated. These are separate decisions.

For a manually operated entrance, consider how an operator reaches the handle and moves the door while managing a trolley. For powered operation, review activation, opening time and closing behaviour against the traffic using the doorway.

Two leaves do not, by themselves, guarantee faster loading. Waiting for clearance, turning a pallet truck or finding the receiving area blocked can take longer than opening the door. Compare the complete transfer routine before choosing an operating system.

Check the Temperature Duty Separately

Both configurations can be designed for chilled or freezer applications, but the selected model must suit the actual operating conditions. Leaf layout alone says nothing about insulation performance or freezer suitability.

For a bi-parting design, ask how the meeting edges seal when closed, alongside the perimeter and floor details. For freezer duty, confirm the specified seal-heating arrangement rather than assuming a chilled-room door is suitable.

Before requesting Sliding Cold Room Doors from Frigovetta Refrigeration System, prepare a sketch showing the clear opening, available wall space on each side, nearby obstructions and room temperature. Add the largest load and how it approaches the entrance. This gives the manufacturer enough context to assess the configuration alongside the daily work.
