Using Hold-Open Features Correctly

Using Hold-Open Features Correctly

A run of loaded trolleys can make repeated door opening awkward. A hold-open feature on an insulated swing door can keep the passage available during a planned transfer, provided the fitted hardware supports it. The important decisions are when to use it, how to release it and who closes the doorway when the work ends.

Confirm How the FeatureWorks

Before the first transfer, identify the hold-open arrangement fitted to the door. Check its operating instructions for the engagement position, release method and any restrictions on use. Do not assume every double-action hinge includes this function.

The maximum opening angle and the hold-open position are different details. A door that swings further does not necessarily stay open at every angle. A stop that limits leaf travel also does not necessarily hold the leaf in place.

Have the installer demonstrate normal operation during handover. Staff should be able to engage and release the feature without guessing or forcing the door beyond its intended travel.

Prepare the Transfer Before Opening

Bring the load into position and make sure the receiving area is ready before engaging hold-open. This avoids leaving the doorway open while someone searches for an empty trolley or clears storage space on the other side.

For a double-leaf opening, check whether the load needs one leaf or both held open. Confirm the available clearance in that configuration; a parked leaf must not obstruct the route beyond the frame.

Agree who releases the doors after the final load. During a busy handover between teams, that small responsibility is easily missed.

Avoid Improvised Door Supports

Do not substitute a pallet, crate or trolley for the fitted hold-open mechanism. These objects can move during handling and place unintended loads on the leaf or its edges. Wedging against a seal can also damage the contact surface.

If the door will not remain in its intended position, stop relying on hold-open until the cause has been checked. Pushing harder, changing hinge settings or tying the leaf back is not an appropriate substitute for the correct operating method.

Close the Door Between Tasks

Hold-open should serve the transfer being carried out. Once the route is clear, release it as instructed and check that each leaf returns to its normal closed position. If the next load is delayed, close the opening instead of leaving it unattended.

Where the doorway separates areas at different temperatures, leaving it open allows air exchange regardless of the insulation within the leaf. Preparing loads before opening and closing promptly afterwards helps limit unnecessary open time without rushing the people moving through.
