Single or Double Door Leaves?

Single or Double Door Leaves?

A cold room may receive small picking trolleys throughout the day but need a much wider entrance when equipment is replaced. Sizing every movement around that occasional delivery can leave staff operating a large leaf on routine trips. Choosing between single and double hinged cold room doors means separating everyday access from the widest load the room must accept.

Start With Two Access Requirements

Record the clear passage needed for normal work, then identify any larger loads that must enter during installation, servicing or future replacement. Include packaging, handles and projecting parts where they remain attached during transfer.

A single leaf can be a practical choice when it provides the required passage and fits the available swing space. A double-leaf arrangement can provide a smaller everyday opening plus wider access when both leaves are released, depending on the selected design.

Confirm usable clear width in each operating position. The nominal width of a leaf is not the same as the passage available beside it.

Decide How Each Leaf Will Be Used

In an active-and-inactive arrangement, the active leaf is used for routine entry. The second leaf normally stays secured until the wider opening is needed. Its release method should be understood by the staff responsible for larger transfers.

Equal leaves are one option. Some manufacturers also offer unequal leaves, allowing a larger daily-use leaf alongside a narrower secondary leaf. Confirm availability and permitted sizes for the proposed door rather than assuming every split is possible.

Ask whether the daily trolley fits comfortably through the active opening. If both leaves must be released on almost every trip, assess whether that operating sequence suits the workload before choosing it.

Review the Meeting Edge

Two leaves introduce a central meeting detail that needs to close and seal correctly. Ask how the secondary leaf is secured and whether the design requires a particular opening or closing sequence.

Include the internal release arrangement in this review. Staff should understand the intended exit operation with the secondary leaf in its normal secured position.

For a freezer, confirm that the complete double-leaf assembly—including the centre joint and specified heating arrangement—is suitable for the operating conditions. Leaf count alone does not establish temperature capability or insulation performance.

Compare the Work, Not Just Width

Before ordering, review three everyday actions: opening for a normal trip, releasing the second leaf for a large load, and restoring full closure afterwards. Check that the hardware is accessible and that neither open leaf conflicts with the handling route.

A wider opening does not automatically make loading easier if releasing and securing the second leaf becomes a repeated interruption. Equally, choosing a single leaf solely for simplicity can create difficulties when essential equipment has to pass through.

Frigovetta Refrigeration System manufactures Hinged Cold Room Doors in single- and double-leaf configurations. Provide the everyday passage requirement and maximum access requirement together so the proposed arrangement can be reviewed against both.
