Checking Rail Passage Clearances

Checking Rail Passage Clearances

A rail height written on a drawing can refer to its top, underside or running surface. If the door and conveyor teams use different reference points, a passage that appears correct on paper may be misplaced during installation. Checking clearances for a monorail cold room door therefore begins with agreeing exactly what each dimension represents.

Use One Measurement Reference

Identify the finished floor level and the precise rail reference used on both suppliers’ drawings. Note whether the site measurement was taken before or after floor finishes were installed. Record the rail’s horizontal position relative to the finished doorway as well as its height.

Avoid dimensions labelled only “rail clearance” without a sketch. A section through the opening should show the rail profile, surrounding door detail and the nearest part of the travelling assembly. This makes it possible to distinguish space for the fixed rail from space needed by equipment moving along it.

On an existing installation, compare the drawing with the installed arrangement. Added brackets, replacement carriers or a relocated support may change the available space even when the main rail has stayed in place.

Measure the Carrier, Then the Load

An empty rail is an incomplete test of the passage. The trolley body, wheel assembly, hook connection and any conveyor attachment may extend beyond the rail profile. Identify which parts travel through the opening and which remain fixed beside it.

Use the actual carrier types intended for the room. If more than one is used, compare their dimensions instead of choosing the one most convenient to measure. Include any occasional carrier required for a different product or production run.

Below the carrier, check the suspended product separately. Its widest point may sit well below the rail cut-out, close to a jamb or projecting fitting. Its lowest point must also clear the finished floor and any threshold detail under the agreed handling conditions. A larger slot around the rail will not solve a restriction lower down.

Allow for Movement and Variation

A hanging load can rotate or sway during transfer. A nearby bend may change its orientation before it reaches the doorway. Ask the conveyor supplier to establish the space required for the expected movement and the approved method of controlling it. A stationary measurement alone cannot define the operating clearance.

Allowances should also account for installation tolerances and any relevant movement of the supported rail under load. The responsible suppliers should establish these allowances for the proposed installation and show them on the coordinated drawing.

Verify Without Altering the Door

Have the installation team verify the agreed clearances using the approved commissioning method, with representative carriers and loads under controlled conditions. Keep people outside trapping areas; nobody should steady a load by placing a hand between it and the frame.

If contact occurs, identify the exact component and location before making changes. Cutting a rail-passage insert or trimming a seal to obtain clearance can affect the intended closure and should not be an improvised site fix. Obtain an agreed correction from the door and conveyor suppliers.

Record the accepted carrier and load combinations on the handover drawing. That gives future production changes a concrete reference: a replacement hook or wider product can be checked against the approved passage before it enters the line.
